Biltong Boys · last updated 1 November 2026

Biltong Boys is a beer-counting app for a group of mates. This page says what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. Plain English, no lawyer voice.

Who's responsible

The app is run by George Rawlins on behalf of the Biltong Boys group. Questions, requests and complaints: george@janarawlins.com. George is the Information Officer for the purposes of South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

What we collect

Why we use it

Who can see what

Anyone with the link to the app can see the tally, the leaderboard, the gallery and the feed, which includes your display name, your photos, your location text, your notes and the AI's public comment. Don't post what you wouldn't want the group to see. Your email address and account details are never shown publicly. The private AI "roast" is only shown to you.

Where it's stored

Accounts and records are stored with Supabase (database, US East region). Photos are stored with Netlify (US). Both are reputable hosting providers with their own security measures. This means your information leaves South Africa; by using the app you're OK with that.

Sponsors and marketing

The app may show a sponsor (currently Dirty South Brew House). Sponsors don't get your personal information. If we ever want to send you marketing on behalf of a sponsor, it goes through Beer mail only, which you opted into and can leave with one tap. We don't sell or rent your details to anyone.

How long we keep it

As long as you're a member and the tally is running. It's a long-term project. Delete your account at any time (below) and your account details are removed; your posts can be removed on request or kept under an anonymous name if you prefer.

Your rights

Under POPIA (and GDPR if you're in the EU) you can ask to see what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or object to how we use it. Email george@janarawlins.com and we'll sort it within a few days. You can also complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa) at inforegulator.org.za.

Age

This app is about beer. You must be 18 or older to use it.

Cookies and local storage

No tracking cookies. The app stores your sign-in session, a device ID and your preferences (name, last location, notification setting) on your own phone so you don't have to type them again.

Changes

If this page changes in a way that matters, we'll say so in the group and update the date at the top.
